The campaign, which covers approximately 670,000 students in its area of responsibility across the country, aims to raise awareness of self-protective and inclusive behaviours and prevent behaviours that disrupt social order, GNR said in a statement.

As part of this program, the GNR recorded 2,631 crimes in the school environment during the last school year, including simple voluntary physical assault (950), threats and coercion (388), opportunistic theft of unguarded objects (137), and defamation, slander, and libel (118 cases).

The police mention that there are also more serious offences, although with a smaller numerical representation, such as other crimes against sexual freedom and self-determination (61 cases), mistreatment or overburdening of minors (45 cases), and possession or trafficking of prohibited weapons (45 cases).

Drug trafficking crimes (44 cases), sexual abuse of dependent children, adolescents and minors or those in vulnerable situations (20 cases) and other breaches of trust (18 cases) were also recorded.

The Guard's officers also recorded 748 non-criminal incidents, disturbances of school activities (374), school dropout situations (230) and addictive behaviours (84).

In the 2025/2026 school year, the GNR carried out 17,276 awareness-raising actions, which covered 790,073 users from the school community served (students, teachers, education assistants and guardians).

“With the expected increase in traffic flow upon returning to school, special emphasis will also be placed on the safety of student transportation, alerting drivers to the mandatory use of seat belts and child restraint systems,” says the GNR.

According to the Guard, the “Safe School Program (PES) aims to prevent risky behaviours and reduce the occurrence of situations that may compromise the safety of students, teachers, and others involved in the school environment and its surroundings.”

The Public Security Police (PSP) has also reinforced its presence near educational establishments and along the home-school and school-home routes of students, teachers, parents, and operational assistants since 7 September, as part of the Safe School Program.

The “Start of the 2026/2027 School Year” operation is preventive and takes place throughout the national territory, with PSP members ensuring the safety of the school community as they return to school activities.
