The markets are among 21 finalists from across Portugal and are competing in the 20th Century category.
Several well-known names have shown their support for Olhão's markets, including Algarve Tourism Region president André Gomes, artist Joana Vasconcelos, DJ Pete Tha Zouk and actor Diogo Infante.
Footballer Gonçalo Ramos, who is from Olhão, has also backed the markets in the competition.
Chef Noélia Jerónimo is also supporting the markets and is the official ambassador of the candidacy.
The two distinctive red-brick market buildings sit side by side on Olhão's waterfront and are one of the city's most recognisable landmarks.
The markets remain an important part of everyday life in Olhão, particularly on Saturday mornings, when the area around them becomes especially busy with the weekly outdoor market.
Their place among the 21 finalists means Olhão is now flying the flag for the Algarve in the final stage of the national competition.
The New 7 Wonders initiative aims to highlight Portuguese heritage from different periods, with the Olhão markets competing against other examples of 20th-century heritage from across the country.
