The bulletin from the Portuguese Renewable Energy Association (APREN) reveals that in August alone, renewable electricity accounted for 69.2%, or 2298 gigawatt-hours (GWh), out of a total of 3320 GWh produced that month.

"The month of August stood out for the strong contribution and balance between solar energy (which once again led production) and wind energy, representing 23.7% and 23.3% of the generation mix, respectively," says the association in a statement. Hydroelectric power ranks third at 14.9%, followed by bioenergy at 7.3%.

Energy use

In August alone, renewable energy production was sufficient to cover all consumption for 14 hours.

In August, renewable energy was sufficient to guarantee electricity consumption for 14 hours. However, between January and August, renewable energy met 707 non-consecutive hours of electricity demand in mainland Portugal.

Portugal position

During this period, Portugal ranked fourth among the eight European countries APREN analysed. Portugal is behind only Norway, which occupies first place, followed by Denmark and Austria.

Money savings

Investment in renewable energy avoided spending €809 million on natural gas imports and €374 million on electricity imports between January and August 2026. APREN also estimates savings of €492 million in CO2 permits.
