On 8 September, CIVISA raised the volcanic alert level for the Furnas volcano to V1 (volcanic system in a metastable equilibrium phase) due to increased seismic activity, including low-magnitude events.

The V1 volcanic alert was in effect for eight days.

A source from CIVISA told the Lusa news agency that the level has returned to V0, given that seismic activity has decreased and "is back within normal patterns."

The Azorean parish of Furnas, in the municipality of Povoação, on São Miguel Island, is known for its volcanic fumaroles.

The volcanic alert scale used by CIVISA has eight levels, where V0 means a volcanic system in a resting phase (normal activity), V1 a volcanic system in a metastable equilibrium phase (weak activity), and V7 a magmatic or hydromagmatic eruption in progress, with colossal to mega-colossal explosiveness.
