Irish buyers remain key players in Portugal’s prime Algarve property market, according to the Engel & Völkers Market Report Portugal 2025–2026.
The findings come ahead of the Moving to Portugal Show and Seminars, which will take place at the Herbert Park Hotel in Ballsbridge, Dublin, on Tuesday, 22 September 2026. The free-to-attend event will provide information for Irish residents considering buying a property, spending more time or living permanently in Portugal.
The report found that international purchasers account for approximately 80 per cent of buyers in the leading Algarve resorts of Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo. Irish buyers feature prominently, alongside purchasers from the UK, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands.
Around 60 per cent of property purchases in these two locations are for second homes. This reflects the continuing appeal of the Algarve to international buyers who want to spend part of the year in Portugal while retaining their principal residence elsewhere.
The findings also show that Portugal’s international property market is not limited to one type of buyer. Some purchasers are planning for retirement, while others are looking for a holiday home, a base for remote working or a property that could eventually become their permanent residence.
A wider choice of locations
Although the Algarve remains Portugal’s leading second-home destination, international demand now extends across the country.
The pretty coastal town of Cascais continues to attract families and buyers seeking easy access to Lisbon while living a coastal lifestyle. The Silver Coast, Comporta, Porto and parts of Northern Portugal are also attracting international interest, each offering different property markets and ways of living.
The choice of location is only one part of the decision to move to Portugal. Prospective buyers also need to consider the legal purchasing process, taxation, property ownership costs, financial planning and the implications of becoming resident in Portugal.
Irish citizens benefit from their rights as European Union citizens when moving to Portugal. However, residency, taxation and financial arrangements still require careful consideration, particularly for those retaining property, pensions, investments or other financial interests in Ireland.
Portuguese specialists in Dublin
The Moving to Portugal Show and Seminars will bring together specialists in Portuguese property, taxation, law, finance, residency and lifestyle. Visitors will be able to attend presentations and discuss their individual questions directly with the Portuguese organisations coming to Dublin.
At the show, Quinta do Lago and Visit Cascais will provide perspectives on two of Portugal’s best-established destinations. They will be joined by property specialists Fine & Country and Garvetur, financial, wealth management and relocation specialists Forvis Mazars, Sovereign Group Portugal, Portugal Pathways, Blacktower Financial Management and Multi Family Wealth plus legal specialists Martinez Echevarria.
Christina Hippisley, General Manager of the Portuguese Chamber of Commerce in the UK, said:
“Irish buyers are already an established presence in Portugal’s international property market, particularly in the Algarve.
“However, buying a property is only one part of the process. People also need to understand the legal, tax and financial implications, as well as whether a particular location is right for the way they intend to live.
“The Dublin show brings these different areas of expertise together in one place and gives visitors an opportunity to ask questions before making any important decisions.”
The seminar programme at the show will cover purchasing property, taxation, legal requirements, financial planning, residency and lifestyle. It is intended for people beginning their research, those already looking for a property and existing property owners now considering spending more time in Portugal.
