In the final, the table tennis player will face Japanese player Jo Yokotani, ranked 145th in the world.

Monteiro, who had secured his place in the semifinals on 17 September, reached the penultimate stage after eliminating Canadian Edward Ly, ranked 181st in the world, 3-0 (11-9, 11-8 and 11-7) in the round of 16.

In the quarterfinals, the Portuguese player won again 3-0, this time against Taiwanese player Chuang Chia-Chuan, with scores of 11-8, 11-1 and 11-5.

The Portuguese player had started the competition against Japanese player Hinata Mochida, whom he defeated 3-2.

In the women's competition, Jieni Shao (72nd), who had started with a victory in the round of 16, beating Chinese player Xiang Junlin (480th) 3-1 (14-12, 11-3, 3-11, 11-7), was eliminated in the quarterfinals by South Korean player Lee Daeun (161st), who won 3-1, with scores of 12-10, 11-6, 8-11 and 11-6.

In turn, the Portuguese player Fu Yu (83rd) was eliminated in the previous phase against South Korea's Heo Yerim (181st) after losing 3-0, with scores of 12-10, 11-5 and 11-8.
