If you live in the central Algarve, chances are you have already heard of Pastelaria Algarve. Located right in the heart of Lagoa, this traditional pastelaria is a favourite with both locals and foreigners – and seems to be busy no matter what time of day you visit.

And there is a good reason why.

The first thing that catches your attention is the large display filled with cakes and pastries. Everything looks tempting, and as the pastries are made in-house, this is also a great place to discover Portuguese sweets beyond the ones everybody already knows.

Of course, you will find favourites such as pastel de nata but look a little further and you will also spot Florados de Lagoa. This traditional sweet from Lagoa is made with almonds, sugar and fios de ovos, and its delicate shape is inspired by the almond blossom. It is certainly one to try if you want something truly local.

Children are not forgotten either. There are colourful muffins topped with chocolate and decorated with different cartoon characters, which naturally makes choosing something from the display even more exciting for younger visitors.

What I like about Pastelaria Algarve is that despite its popularity, it feels very much like a local café. People pop in for their morning coffee, meet friends over something sweet or simply stop by to pick up cakes to take home.

Pastelaria Algarve is all about traditional pastries, plenty of choice and that busy, everyday Portuguese café atmosphere.
