The implementation of High Performance Learning (HPL) across Dukes Education Portugal represents a significant investment in educational excellence. While the phrase "high performance" may suggest a focus on top academic performers, the philosophy behind HPL is rooted in a different belief: every young person can develop the knowledge, skills, behaviours and attitudes needed to achieve success when given the right teaching, support and opportunities.
As Dukes Education Portugal continues to embed this framework across its schools in Lisbon, Porto and Braga, what will it mean for students in practice?
To find out more, we spoke with two key advocates leading the initiative – Rebecca Clements, Director of Performance in Europe and Manj Nijjer, Director of Learning & Safeguarding in Portugal – about what HPL means for students and educators in practice, and how HPL fits into Dukes Education’s overall strategy for excellence.
The belief that every student can succeed
For Manj, one of the most powerful aspects of HPL is its underlying philosophy:
"High Performance Learning is built on 40 years of research conducted by Professor Deborah Eyre," he explains. "The philosophy has foundations in the belief that high achievement is not reserved for a select few. It recognises that, with the right teaching, support and opportunities, every child can develop the attitudes, skills and habits needed to succeed both in school and beyond."
This shift in thinking moves the conversation away from fixed ideas of ability and towards the understanding that learning can be developed. Rather than assuming only a select group of students may be capable of academic excellence, the focus becomes how schools can create the conditions for every student to grow, thrive and achieve their personal best.
Developing the 'how' as well as the 'what'
While strong academic knowledge remains essential, HPL goes further by helping students understand how they learn most effectively.
According to Rebecca, this is where the approach becomes particularly powerful in the classroom.
"In practice, High Performance Learning is about creating learning environments where high expectations and meaningful challenge are for every student, not just those already identified as high achievers. At its core, HPL is about developing the 'how' of learning as well as the 'what' – ensuring students develop not only knowledge, but the confidence and capacity to use it effectively."
Through HPL’s framework, teachers intentionally develop cognitive skills alongside personal qualities such as curiosity, resilience, perseverance and reflection, helping students become increasingly confident and independent learners. As such, students are encouraged to think deeply, explain their reasoning, make connections between ideas and apply their knowledge in unfamiliar situations.
Importantly, they are also taught to become more aware of their own learning processes – the metacognitive strategy of “learning about learning.” By learning how to plan, monitor and evaluate their own progress, students develop the confidence to take increasing ownership of their educational journey.
"The aim is for our Dukes Education students to develop both the knowledge and the learning strategies they need to approach challenge with confidence, think independently and become increasingly effective lifelong learners," adds Rebecca.
Building confidence through challenge
The benefits of HPL extend well beyond academic performance. One of its central messages is that struggle and challenge are a natural part of learning, rather than signs of failure. By helping students understand that progress comes through effort, reflection and perseverance, student learning is two-fold: academic growth and personal confidence.
"One of the most powerful aspects of HPL is its central message that ability is not fixed and that every student can develop as a learner," Rebecca explains. "Struggle is not seen as proof that a student is 'not good at' a subject, but as a normal part of the learning process."
As students develop greater self-awareness and a wider range of learning strategies, they become better equipped to respond positively when things become difficult. Over time, this strengthens learner agency and resilience, helping students make purposeful choices and take greater responsibility for their learning journey.

Preparing students for their future
In a rapidly changing world, success requires more than strong examination results alone. Young people need to be adaptable, reflective and capable of navigating complexity.
According to Manj, HPL provides the ideal outline for achieving exactly that.
"HPL provides a structured framework that helps teachers develop the cognitive skills and personal qualities associated with success. By making these behaviours visible and teachable, we empower students to become more confident, independent and ambitious learners."
This aligns closely with Dukes Education's commitment to maximising each student's potential by ensuring young people leave school equipped with the knowledge, confidence and adaptability to navigate higher education, future careers and an ever-changing world.
In fact, Rebecca views this as a natural extension of Dukes Education’s broader educational vision.
"Ultimately, our goal is for students to leave us not only with strong academic outcomes, but as thoughtful, independent, resilient and ambitious learners who have the confidence to navigate complexity and adapt to new situations."
She adds: "At Dukes, this means recognising the unique profile of every student and creating the conditions for them to discover their strengths, love learning and find their extraordinary."
A shared vision across Dukes Education Portugal
As HPL has been introduced across all Dukes’ schools in Portugal, it now provides a common language and shared understanding of excellence, while allowing each school to incorporate its own unique strengths and identity into delivery and rollout.
"What excites me most is the opportunity to create a shared culture of excellence across our schools while celebrating the unique strengths of each community," says Manj. "HPL provides a common language and vision that will help every student, in every Dukes Portugal school, thrive and fulfil their potential."
Ultimately, High Performance Learning is about widening opportunity, raising aspirations and ensuring that every student benefits from exceptional teaching and learning. By making the behaviours and habits associated with success visible and teachable, HPL helps more young people flourish academically, personally and socially.
As Manj concludes: "At Dukes Education Portugal, we are committed to ensuring outstanding teaching and learning for every child. The implementation of HPL is a powerful example of our commitment in action, helping us create the conditions for all students to flourish academically, personally and socially."
By investing in evidence-informed teaching, professional development and the learning behaviours that underpin success, Dukes Education Portugal is delivering on its commitment to provide every student with the opportunity to thrive academically, socially and personally, both now and in the future.
