In statements to Lusa, Andreia Galvão, director of the Convent of Christ, said that "the life of a monument does not end with the PRR," pointing to the continued enhancement and preservation of the Convent and the importance of "revitalising the restored space" with new projects after the works.

The Convent of Christ, a World Heritage monument in Tomar, in the district of Santarém, initially received €5.2 million from the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), intended for the cloisters and the rehabilitation of the Henriquino Palace, Alcáçova/Castle and garden.

According to Andreia Galvão, the cloisters of Santa Bárbara, D. João III, and Lavagem should be "fully available" on the visitor circuit later this month, while the works at Terreiro de Armas are scheduled for completion in October.

The director explained that the last works meeting took place on 31 August, and the processes are being finalised, with the final adjustments to the work carried out within the PRR deadline being made.

However, work continues, including at Pátio da Botica, which Andreia Galvão said is "outside the PRR deadline," estimating that the ongoing interventions will be completed by the end of the year.

The president of Cultural Heritage, João Soalheiro, explained to Lusa that the initially planned program had to be altered during execution, particularly at Paço Henriquino.

“We set out to create a specific itinerary that we had to correct midway through,” he said, indicating that a project launched for the Paço Henriquino, worth around four million euros, had to be “shortened.”

According to Soalheiro, some of the planned solutions proved incompatible with the heritage characteristics identified in the meantime.

“At some point we realised that if we went ahead with the contracted project, we would destroy heritage,” he said, stressing that this was not a result of the project being poorly designed, but of a then “superficial” knowledge of the monument's characteristics, namely due to the absence of archaeological intervention.
