Cleaner air, quicker thinking
A clever trial suggests the air inside your home may be doing more to your thinking than you'd guess.
We think of traffic fumes as an outdoors problem. Close the front door, put the kettle on, and the air becomes yours. Except some pollution follows you in - and cleaner indoor air may give your thinking a small, measurable lift.
Researchers in Somerville, Massachusetts, recruited 119 adults aged 30 to 74 living within 200 metres of major roads. Each home ran HEPA purifiers in the bedroom and living room for one month, and identical units without filters for another, in random order, with a month's break between. Residents did not know which was which.
After each month they took a timed test - the join-the-dots-while-switching-between-numbers-and-letters kind that measures mental flexibility. Among the 50 people aged 40 and over, average completion time was 12 per cent faster after the HEPA month: 54 seconds rather than 61.4.
Honesty corner: the whole group did not improve significantly, nor did the simpler test. Cognition was a secondary outcome, the age division was examined afterwards, and fewer than ten participants were over 60. This is a promising nudge, not a shield for the ageing brain.
But it is a rare brain finding with a practical door handle. If your flat faces a busy avenida - buses braking, scooters accelerating, delivery vans beneath the balcony - you know how close traffic sits to the room. A suitable purifier costs money and replacement filters, but requires no new regime. The free step is to ventilate when outdoor air is cleaner, rather than at rush hour.
The brain does plenty for us. Cleaner air may be one small kindness we can return.
The cancer target that finally gave way
For forty years, the protein behind most pancreatic cancers was called untouchable - that changed last week.

Some health news arrives so rarely that you read it twice. For decades, pancreatic cancer was the diagnosis whose story barely seemed to change. Last week, it did.
More than nine in ten pancreatic ductal adenocarcinomas - the commonest type - carry a RAS mutation. For forty years, scientists called RAS "undruggable": smooth, fast-moving, nowhere obvious for medicine to grip. Chemists kept trying.
On 26 August, the FDA approved daraxonrasib, the first broad RAS-targeted medicine for metastatic pancreatic adenocarcinoma. The once-daily tablet is for adults whose cancer has already been treated.
In the deciding trial, 500 people whose cancer had spread after earlier treatment were randomly assigned daraxonrasib or chemotherapy. Those taking the tablet lived for a median of 13.2 months, against 6.7 months with chemotherapy - almost twice as long. Tumours responded in 30 per cent of patients rather than 11 per cent, nearly three times as many.

Now the honest part. This is not a cure, and a median is not a promise to any individual. Side effects including rash, mouth sores and diarrhoea were common. Its US price is an extraordinary $39,800 a month. It is approved only in America for now; Europe's medicines regulator has begun an expedited review, but it is not yet authorised in Portugal.
So why is it here? Because "undruggable" was a forty-year wall, and that wall now has a door. For families living with this disease, it is worth discussing with an oncology team, including whether European trials or access routes are relevant.
Hope, honestly measured, is still hope. For pancreatic cancer, that is real news.
Seven hours is not a sleep debt
The biggest study of sleep and ageing yet has quietly retired the eight-hour rule - and the news is kinder than you'd expect.
"Sleep is not an exam, and seven hours is not a debt."
Somehow, eight hours became sleep's pass mark. Nine is extra credit; seven requires an apology. No wonder we lie awake at 3am doing arithmetic: if I fall asleep now, I can still get six and a half. At that hour, the bedside clock becomes a tiny accountant with terrible bedside manner.
Here is some soothing news. Columbia-led researchers drew on UK Biobank data from around half a million adults aged 37 to 84. They compared self-reported sleep with 23 biological-age estimates built from scans, blood proteins and metabolites.
Across nine brain and body systems, the clocks showed a clear U-shaped curve. The youngest-looking points fell between 6.4 and 7.8 hours, depending on the organ and sex. Separate analyses associated under six and over eight hours with more disease and earlier death than sleeping six to eight.
That does not make six hours and 24 minutes a new target, or eight hours and one minute dangerous. This is a population curve, not a prescription. The study measured duration, not sleep quality, regularity or timing. It found association rather than cause. Long sleep can also signal illness, depression or broken sleep rather than causing the problem.
The reassuring message is quieter: seven-ish sits comfortably inside healthy territory. Official advice still says most adults need seven to nine hours, and how you function by day matters too. If you wake naturally after seven hours and feel well, that is not a failure requiring supplements, apps or a podcast. Persistent change or daytime exhaustion is worth mentioning to a GP.
Tonight, when the 3am arithmetic starts, cancel the sum. Sleep is not an exam, and seven hours is not a debt.
