The lovely port city just south of Lisbon is home to arguably one of Portugal's most iconic and comforting seafood specialities. Choco Frito. Despite its name translating simply to fried cuttlefish, this beloved dish is much more than a quick bite; it is a true culinary institution deeply rooted in the fishing traditions of the Sado River.
The preparation is deceptively simple yet requires an expert touch. Fresh cuttlefish strips are typically marinated in garlic, white wine, and bay leaves, given a light dusting of flour or corn flour, and plunged into hot oil until golden and crunchy on the outside while remaining tender on the inside.

Traditionally served piled high on a platter, it is accompanied by generous portions of homemade potato chips or French fries, a simple salad, and fresh lemon wedges meant to be squeezed generously over the top.
Whether enjoyed at a bustling tavern or as a casual seaside treat, biting into hot, crispy choco frito paired with a cold local drink offers an unforgettable taste of Portuguese coastal culture.
